Provenance : Josef Englert; and by descent. The poem in autograph, 'Im Kamin krümmt sich in Schmerzen das brennende Scheit', is a characteristic interior at evening. Three of the typescript poems spring from the bleak imaginary landscape of Hesse's late masterpiece, The Glass Bead Game : the best known of the group here, Der letzte Glasperlenspieler , depicts the last of the players of the mysterious glass bead game, at ease in a scene of desolation, old and alone, still carefully selecting the right pearl for the game. 'Der Dichter in unsrer Zeit' urges the continuing duties of the poet, 'Leidvoll zu dienen, Opfer ohne Tat'. Hesse's poem on the burial of his brother contrasts the family standing around his brother's grave in the rain with a dream-vision of himself striking his brother as a child, and ends with the reflection 'Wie allein Geht man von Gräbern weg!'.
