(N1 in vol.1 with a corner torn away.) Contemporary Cambridge-style panelled calf, spines sparingly tooled with volume numbers only, edges sprinkled red (vol. 1 neatly rebacked). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, in an attractive binding. A highly important collection of Spanish narratives of exploration and conquest, drawing on some sources no longer extant. Herrera was royal historiographer to Philip II, III and IV of Spain and had privileged access to the archives; his ambitious and comprehensive compilation was published as Historia general de los hechos de los Castellanos en las islas y tierra firme del Mar Oceano (Madrid, 1601-1615).
