HEROLT, Johannes (d.1468). Liber Discipuli de eruditione Christifidelium . [Reutlingen: Michel Greyff, ca. 1479-81]. Chancery 2° (269x195mm). Collation: [1 4 2-3 8 4 6 5-16 8 17 10 18-21 8 22-23 6 24 8 25 6 ] (1/1-2r blank, 1/2v contents table, 1/4r prologue, 1/4v blank, 2/1r text, 23/6r table of sermon summaries, 24/7v alphabetical table, 25/6r blank). 190 leaves. 42 lines and headline. Type: 1:87 a , printed guide-letters. 3- to 7-line initials, capital strokes, paragraph marks and underlining in red, early MS. quiring visible in some upper margins. (Light dampstaining, small wormholes occasionally affecting a few letters, marginal tears in final leaf not extending to text.) Contemporary calf over wooden boards, blindstamped, single brass fore-edge clasp (original leather worn, replaced with new sheepskin at spine and edges), printed pastedowns in same type as text, possibly bound at Esslingen (Kyriss shop 94, stamps 1, 5). Provenance : contemporary marginal annotations in red; Hilbrand Brandenburg of Biberach (1442-1514), with inscription as canon of Stuttgart dated 1492; Buxheim, Carthusians, with inscription following the usual formula recording it as Brandenburg's gift, and Buxheim library stamp. Third edition, printed by the first printer at Reutlingen. This volume originally formed part of the large donation of books given by Hilbrand Brandenburg to the Buxheim Charterhouse. Previously a student and rector at the university of Basel and a canon of Stuttgart, he entered Buxheim as a "donatus" priest in his old age in 1506, after having made gifts to the monastery for almost 40 years. His printed bookplate, presumably removed in the 19th century, is one of the earliest. (See Victor Scholderer, "Hilprand Brandenburg and his books", The Library , 5th ser., 4, 1949, pp.196-201; M. von Arnim, Katalog der Bibliothek Otto Schäfer , Stuttgart, 1984, 118.) H *8516; BMC II, 578 (IB. 10671); Goff H-92; Polain(B) 1913; BSB H-124
