PROPERTY OF A EUROPEAN CONNOISSEUR TWO MAGNIFICENT CASES OF LA CHAPELLE OF TOP POST-WAR VINTAGES lots 717 to 718 Lying in Twickenham, Middlesex (EHD) Lot 717 is offered duty-paid, but available in bond "La Chapelle is one of the world's greatest wines, with the concentration and structure for long ageing in great vintages such as 1961, 1966, 1978, 1983 and 1990. Here, 20 years cellaring brings out riches which are barely discernable in the dense, tightly-knit, tannic young Syrah. For relatively less grand vintages such as 1971, 1972, 1979 and 1988, a decade or so develops gorgeously seductive aromas of sous-bois and spice, and elegant, silky, flavours. Sadly, unlike Bordeaux, where a deep purse will secure almost any vintage one could wish for, older vintages of La Chapelle or, indeed other great Rhônes are virtually unobtainable. The only answer is to buy young and wait." RHONE RENAISSANCE, Remington Norman MW (Mitchell Beazley 1995). Hermitage, La Chapelle--Vintage 1961 Rhône. Domaine-bottled: Paul Jaboulet Aîné New modern style capsules and labels recently applied in the cellars of the producer. Levels ten 2.5cms or better, one 3 and one 4cms. below base of capsules A unique and possibly unrepeatable opportunity to acquire a true, pristine case of this rare wine with impeccable and unimpeachable provenance. These bottles have lain together, undisturbed, in the cellars of the producer since bottling. See cover illustration Tasting note: Huge in 1967; fruit laden in 1983. Magnificent in 1990. One of my top scores in the "Parker 100" tasting in Hamburg, last tasted October 1993. ***** M.B. Tasting note: This is unquestionably one of the greatest wines made in the twentieth century. In the two dozen tastings where I have had the 1961 La Chapelle, I rated it 100 points twenty times. The opaque purple/garnet color is accompanied by spectacular aromatics representing the essence of old vine Syrah (smoked meat, pepper, hoisin sauce, and soy). As the wine sits in the glass, notions of pepper, new saddle leather, grilled meat, and awesome levels of blackberry, plum, and black currant liqueur-like notes emerge. Extremely unctuous, with compelling concentration and purity, this full-bodied, seamless, mouthfilling 1961 is truly immortal. It still possesses a freshness and vigor that defy its nearly forty years of age. It should continue to drink well for two more decades. Prodigious stuff! Robert Parker Wine Advocate, June 2000 12 bottles per lot
