The present painting is according to the tradition at Valdemar's Castle, painted by Hermann Winterhalter and probably in Franz Xaver Winterhalter's (1805–1873) studio. The painting on the easel is a depiction of Franz Xaver's famous full-length portrait of Empress Eugénie from 1853 (see also cat. no. 236). The painter at the easel is possibly Franz Xaver Winterhalter or Hermann himself or another artist working in the studio of Franz Xaver.
