Hermann Ottomar Herzog (German/American, 1832-1932) Alpine View Signed and dated "H. Herzog 1877" l.l. Oil on canvas, 28 1/4 x 40 in. (71.8 x 101.6 cm), in a period frame. Condition: Lined, scattered retouch, varnish inconsistencies, craquelure, surface grime. Provenance: A private New England collection. N.B. German Romanticist painter Hermann Herzog was born in Bremen in 1832, and studied classical landscape painting at the Düsseldorf Academy. He went on to exhibit at the Paris Salon and, while in Paris, was introduced to the style of the Barbizon School painters. Herzog was particularly influenced by their use of color and light to create atmospheric effects, and their portrayal of the splendor of nature. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, painting the landscapes of Norway, Belgium, Holland, Bavaria, Switzerland, and Italy. By the 1860s Herzog had moved to the U.S., however, he continued to paint images of rugged European terrain that inspired him early in his career.
