HERBERT ZANGS (GERMAN 1924 - 2003) Untitled - a pair each signed ZANGS (lower right) both acrylic on board each 38 x 30 cm (2) Herbert Zangs associated with the Zero movement, a group of artists who sought to redefine art in the aftermath of World War II by emphasising minimalism, simplicity, and the use of new materials and technologies. He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Krefeld and the Staatliche Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf, where he was a student of Georg Meistermann and Otto Pankok In the early 1950s, Zangs became associated with the Zero movement, which was founded by artists including Heinz Mack Otto Piene and Günther Uecker The group rejected traditional forms of artistic expression and instead sought to create art that was free from the constraints of representation and subjectivity. Zangs's work often involved the use of simple materials such as paper, cardboard, and wood, which he manipulated and arranged in ways that emphasised their inherent qualities of texture, colour, and form. He also experimented with new techniques such as photograms and silkscreen printing, which allowed him to create images that were abstract and ephemeral. Zangs exhibited his work widely throughout his career, both in Germany and internationally. He also taught at a number of institutions, including the Staatliche Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf and the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg.
