Herbal.- L'Obel (Matthias de) Plantarum seu Stirpium Icones, 2 vol. in 1, woodcut device on printed title, numerous woodcut illustrations, sig. E3 with woodcut overlay, sig. Ff in vol.2 misbound, copious ink annotations throughout, many contemporary, a few tears and marginal defects, some soiling and occasional staining including one ring-mark, contemporary ink inscription to title "Jacobi Rieding Basilae 1584" and 3 later inscriptions, bookplate of Robert James Shuttleworth, later half vellum, [Nissen 1220; Hunt 138], oblong 4to, Antwerp, Ex officina Christophori Plantini, 1581. ⁂ "First edition of this collection of the fine woodcuts made by Plantin for various botanical works; the classification was made by de Lobel. It is a most useful reference work in connection with the study of 16th-century botanical illustration." (Hunt).
