(verso) Graphite, coloured pencils, pen and ink, squared for transfer 29.4 x 38cm Provenance: Given by the artist to Francis Dodd RA (1874-1949) This recent discovery is a study for an unknown and probably never realised painting. Since 1907 Henry Lamb had been in love with Dorelia McNeil, the partner of Augustus John Lamb would visit Dorelia frequently at Alderney Manor, Poole, writing in 1911 'She lives in an amazing place - a vast secluded park of prairies, pine woods, birch woods, dells and moors with a house, cottages and a circular walled-garden'. The work depicts Dorelia in the centre, plucking an apple in the guise of Eve, and her sister Edie. Additionally, we see two children, who Rebecca John has identified as her father Caspar and probably his younger brother Edwin, two of Augustus John's children from his first marriage to Ida Nettleship.
