HENRY C. ANDREWS (fl.1794-1830) The Botanist's Repository, for new, and rare plants. Containing coloured figures of such plants, as have not hitherto appeared in any similar publication. London: T.Bensley for the author, 1797[-1815]. 10 volumes, 4 (267 x 208mm). Letterpress title to vol.I. 10 engraved titles, 664 fine hand-coloured engraved plates by Andrews, 64 folding. (Some plate captions and numbering shaved with loss, occasionally just affecting the image area, some light offsetting.) Contemporary diced russia gilt (neatly rebacked, but covers of vol.I and upper or lower covers of vols.VIII-X detached, some other joints weak.) Provenance : Stephen Middleton (armorial bookplate). A fine series, highlighting the exotic species, which "..made a contribution of lasting importance to the literature of botany and horticulture by providing records and means of identification of a great diversity of beautiful and interesting plants, many of them new to science" (Hunt). As usual any printed titles for vols.II-X have been discarded in favour of engraved titles, more unusually, vol.I includes both the printed and the engraved titles. The text is by John Kennnedy, Adrian Howarth and George Jackson the plates, by Andrews, include a large number of species from South Africa, including 47 proteas and 26 ixias.
