HENRICUS ARIMINENSIS (fl. early 14th century). De quattuor virtutibus cardinalibus . Edited by Thomas Dorniberg (fl. ca. 1472). Speier: [Printer of the 'Gesta Christi', after 11 November 1472-not after 1473]. Chancery 2 o (288 x 201 mm). Collation: [1 1 0 2-17 8 18 1 0] editor's preface, table,v explicit dated 11 November 1472, 2/1r text, 18/9r colophon, 18/9v-10 blank). 147 leaves (of 148, 18/9 cut away at a later date, leaving wide stub showing rubrication), quire 1, containing the table, bound at end. 32 lines. Type: 1:120G. 2- to 7-line initial spaces. Initials in red and green, paragraph marks and capital strokes in red, manuscript headlines in brown ink. Two pinholes per page often visible, those in quires 2 and 3 at outer corner of type-page, elsewhere at upper and lower outside corner. (A few sheets browned, puncture in quire 18 affecting some letters but without loss.) Binding : brand of a five-petal flower on edges of bookblock at head and tail of spine -- contemporary blind-stamped pigskin over thick unbevelled wooden boards, sides tooled with wide triple fillets to a saltire design, early paper title label on front cover (rubbed), two brass fore-edge clasps, spine with old paper label and lettered with shelfmark, three early endleaves preserved, quire guards from a ?14th-century liturgical manuscript on vellum with German neumes, edges stained yellow (endpapers renewed, slight wear at head of spine). Provenance : Georg Kloss (1787-1854): booklabel -- Cary W. Bok (1905-1970): signature dated March 1928 -- [Swann Galleries, 4 May 1978, lot 128, to Lathrop Harper] FIRST EDITION of these sermons on the four cardinal virtues addressed to the citizens of Venice by the Prior of the Dominican convent of SS. Giovanni e Paolo there. It is one of only a handful of books printed by this short-lived anonymous press, the second at Speier. Hain and Goff gave precedence to an undated edition printed at Strassburg ca. 1473-1474 (Goff H-19), but that edition is a page-for-page reprint of the present Speier edition (cf. GW 12193).
