HENDRICK GOLTZIUS Two engravings. Jupiter and Juno * Neptune and Amphitrite . Both circa 1590. Both approximately 321x216 mm; 12 3/4x8 1/2 inches, thread margins. Both with a Strasburg Lily watermark. Both very good impressions with strong contrasts. The traditional attribution of these engravings (from a set of 3 representing paired gods and goddesses) to Jan Saenredam from Bartsch onward, has recently been questioned by Jan Filed Kok who reattributes the works to Goltzius himself, based on stylistic and technical similarities to other engravings by Goltzius from the 1590s which carry his monogram. Bartsch 53 and 54; Hollstein 57 and 58 (as Saenredam).
