HEMINGWAY, Ernest. Typed letter signed, twice ("Ernest" and "E. Hemingway"), to Nathan William Davis San Francisco de Paula, Cuba, 27 May 1942.
HEMINGWAY, Ernest. Typed letter signed, twice ("Ernest" and "E. Hemingway"), to Nathan William Davis San Francisco de Paula, Cuba, 27 May 1942. "ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING THINGS TO ME ALWAYS IS HOW DIFFERENT PLACES LOOK TO ME, THE SAME PLACES, AS THEY LOOK TO D. H. LAWRENCE" A LONESOME HEMINGWAY COMPARES HIMSELF TO D. H. LAWRENCE in this letter to Davis, written after the departure of his third wife, Martha Gellhorn to visit her mother in St. Louis. "It was a damned shame that you two [Davis and his wife Emily] couldn't get over here now. Marty is up visiting her mother and it is plenty lonesome. Winston was here for four days and Bumby for two, but the next ten days nobody here but the cats. I hope you had a fine time at Oaxaca and didn't pick up any fever. I was reading D. H. Lawrence's letters and saw he got some there. But he always got something, or didn't get something, everywhere. One of the most amazing things to me always is how different places look to me, the same places, as they look to D. H. Lawrence" He asks Davis to contact Cisneros in Mexico City (where Davis resides) on an unspecified matter: "Please tell him that I am working all the time on the other business. I think that would be in Spanish 'el asunto.' I will let you know as soon as there is any news....I have been working very hard and certainly miss you guys and wish you were here." He also asks Davis to send his regards to Don Cayetano, whose grandfather, El Nino de la Palma, was the model for the matador in Sun Also Rises . NOT PUBLISHED.
