HEMINGWAY, ERNEST. The Fifth Column and the First Forty-Nine Stories . New York: Scribner's, 1938. 8 o (210 x 144 mm). Original red cloth. FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by the author to Dr. Robert Pfeiffer on front free endpaper. "To Dr. Roberts [sic] with warmest best wishes, Ernest Hemingway." The recipient was a cousin of Hemingway's second wife Pauline Pfeiffer and a nephew of G.A. ("Uncle Gus") Pfeiffer, a great friend to Hemingway and his wife. G.A. Pfeiffer financed their trip to Africa in 1934 and purchased and gave them their house in Key West. He was the dedicatee of A Farewell to Arms , published a few months after the Hemingway-Pauline Pfeiffer marriage in 1929. Dr. Pfeiffer was Chairman of the Department of Semitic Languages and History at Harvard from 1933 until his death in 1958.
