HEMINGWAY, Ernest. Inscribed and corrected complete set of galley proofs for Green Hills of Africa (New York: Scribner's, 1935). 99 long folio galleys, 24 x 6 in. (60 x 155 cm.), the galleys paginated, corresponding to the text of the book (first divisional half-title to the end, pages 1-295), including the Edward Shenton illustrations, the galleys folded over once, occasional slight marginal soiling and tiny fox marks, some finger-smudging on versos from the pulling of the proof, last galley a little wrinkled and with a small marginal tear and a few nicks ; PROVOCATIVELY INSCRIBED BY HEMINGWAY TO JANE MASON in blue ink at top of first galley (above first divisional half-title): "To Jane from her affectionate pupil with undistorted affection and many happy returns of some other day in another country and the wench is never dead --"; WITH CORRECTIONS BY HEMINGWAY (see below); IN FINE CONDITION. "GREEN HILLS OF AFRICA": INSCRIBED GALLEYS WITH CORRECTIONS Hemingway's most extensive markings (all in pencil) by far occur at the end of Chapter Three (pages 66-67 in the galleys and the book), mostly involving critical remarks about Gertrude Stein (unnamed). Here Hemingway has crossed out the final 19 lines (the area is marked by a safety pin) and has written three insertions (22 words) in the margins -- but these he has also scored through. This tricky passage is expanded in the published version, preserving nearly all of the deleted printed sentences and all but one word of the holograph insertions ("bitch", referring to Stein, becomes "fat female" in the marginal revision and simply "female" in the book). Hemingway's other corrections/revisions (all in pencil, a total of five words plus markings on 13 galleys) comprise: six spelling corrections with the correct word written in the margin at three places; a name change ("Ben" to "Dan" on p. 208); six commas inserted and two other punctuation changes; and a word inserted, a word deleted, and two typos corrected. Below this inscription to Jane and next to the Shenton illustration of a rhinoceros, there is a Hemingway pen mark (or slip of the pen). Hemingway's book about his month's safari in East Africa in 1933-34 was published on 25 October 1935, after serialization in Scribner's Magazine (from May to November). In his intriguing inscription to Jane Mason on this set of galleys, Hemingway echoes the lines from Christopher Marlowe's The Famous Tragedy of the Rich Jew of Malta (which he used as a basic "idea" for A Farewell to Arms ): "'Thou hast committed'...'Fornication, but that was in another country and besides the wench is dead.'" See Young and Mann 10D for a set of galley proofs, "sparse corrections," at the Monroe County Public Library, Key West. The holograph manuscript for the book is in the Barrett Library at the University of Virginia.
