"Obviously hoping for favorable comment, Hawthorne sent a first copy of [ Twice-Told Tales , 1837] to another former [Bowdoin] classmate, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow...Hawthorne had admired his Outre-Mer: A Pilgrimage Beyond the Sea , a volume of travel sketches published two years before. The two men had not seen each other since their final days at Bowdoin, twelve years before...His letter [presenting Twice-Told Tales ] was characteristically deferential:'...The present volume contains such articles as seemed best worth offering to the public a second time; and I should flatter myself that they would repay you some part of the pleasure which I have derived from your Outre-Mer '" (James R. Mellow, Nathanial Hawthorne in His Times , Boston, 1980, pp. 78-89). Provenance : Stephen H.
