FIRST EDITION of Hawthorne's classic tale of adultery, guilt and vengeance. In spite of its controversial story and themes, the book sold very well, with 2,500 copies in readers' hands after the first week alone. In the accompanying letter, Hawthorne supplies an autograph and apologizes for assuming his correspondent was female: "...But for your express declaration that you are a boy, I might have imagined another origin for your very pretty and graceful note" since the "beauty and delicate freedom of the cleriography would rather have seemed to indicate the fair hand of a young lady."
