PRESENTATION COPY OF THE RARE FIRST EDITION written at the behest of his friends and printed for private distribution. It was an immediate success and Hawker was obliged to issue enlarged and illustrated editions; by the time of his death it had gone through ten editions. In the Great Exhibition of 1851 were shown some of Hawker's firearms with subtle alterations which he had hoped would attract attention by the War Office. He also composed music and in 1820 patented an improvement in the construction of the pianoforte. Schwerdt I, p. 234.
