Title: Hawaiian tariff and digest of the laws and regulations of the customs, pilot and harbor regulations, position and bearings of light houses, currency tables, postage rates, list of diplomatic and consular agents, &c. Author: Hassinger, John A. Place: Honolulu Publisher: Printed at the Gazette office Date: 1871 Description: iv, 72 pp. 21x14.5 cm. (8¼x5¾"), original cloth-backed printed boards. Rare handbook to trade regulations and other legal strictures for the Kingdom of Hawaii. Forbes remarks that there are sections on: "tariff, or rates of duties on goods imported into the kingdom; the arrival and entry of vessels and whalemen; Custom House guards; passengers; the Marine Hospital tax; passport regulations..." etc. This copy with pencil inscription on the front free endpaper, "Commander R.W. Meade, U.S.N. from Capt. Babcock, Pilot for Honolulu, H.I., Jany. 27th, 1872." With the bookplate of Allen March Nowell, a Hawaiian sugar factor who settled in Hawaii in 1898, rising from various clerical and accounting jobs to be secretary and manager of the Sugar Factors Co., Ltd.; his ink ownership signature is on the front cover. OCLC/WorldCat lists only seven copies of the 1871 edition, which seems to be the first: at Cal State San Marcos; Univ. of Hawaii at Manoa; Univ. of Michigan; Houston Public Library; Harvard; and two copies at the British Library. There is one auction record for the 1893 edition, according to American Book Prices Current ($500 in 2007), but none for the 1871 edition. Forbes 2897. Lot Amendments Condition: Large ink blot on front board, with flecks, etc., affecting the latter part of the title; a few ink flecks to page fore-edges, very occasional spotting in the margins; else very good, internally clean, quite scarce.
