HAUNT OF FEAR No. 15 Author: Place: Publisher: Date: Description: EC (Indicia: "Fables Publishing Co."). Good- (1.8). Small chip bottom corner front cover, ¼x½" chip back cover. Nicks and stress at spine. Soft and pulpy, edgewear, handling soil especially to back cover. Bottom staple rusty. Cream pages, tanned at edges. Well-read but solid and intact. Graham Ingels cover. Scripts by Al Feldstein and Bill Gaines. Art by Graham Ingels George Evans Jack Kamen Jack Davis House ad for MAD #1 featuring Jack Davis caricatures of EC staffers and artists. Featuring Jack Davis' "Death of Some Salesmen," in which an old backwoods couple, leery of scams, test appliances on salesmen before taking the plunge. Appliances tested out on salesmen with fatal results include an oven, a clothes dryer, a freezer, a vacuum, and—ugh—a meat slicer. In EC horror stories, the domestic apparatus of postwar prosperity often doubled as instruments of doom. EC's gloomy view of the corrosive effects of postwar prosperity was a dime store echo of the critiques of literary discontents such as Henry Miller whose 1945 indictment of midcentury American life, The Air-Conditioned Nightmare, has a certain philosophical overlap with EC's themes. A limited edition of 100 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues are available. Over 200 pages, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcovers $40, dust-jacketed hardcover with limitation plate $200. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com or visit: https://www.pbagalleries.com/content/comics/. R. Crumb says, "I found [PBA's catalogue] so interesting that I am saving it for the texts that accompany the comics which were put up for auction. This is some of the best commentary I’ve yet seen on the quality of the content of comic books. I especially enjoyed the reviews of the post-war horror comics. Great. Priceless." Consignments welcome for PBA's Spring 2021 Comic Book sale. Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age and Silver Age comics, original art and ephemera sought. Send inquiries to ivan@pbagalleries.com.
