Property from an Important American Collection
Hardy, ThomasA Pair of Blue Eyes. London: Tinsley Brother, 8 Catherine St. Strand, 1873
3 volumes, 8vo. Half-titles, misaligned "c" in "clouds" on p. 5 of volume II; light scattered foxing, one gathering loosening a little in volume II. Publisher's blue cloth (Carter's "B" binding); wear to head and foot of spines, spine of volume I worn a a little faded, volume I slightly cocked, some small scratches to covers of volumes I and III.
The notoriously rare first edition of Hardy's third novel.
A Pair of Blue Eyes was first serialized in Tinsley's Magazine between September 1872 and July 1873, appearing in book form in the latter year. It was the first of Hardy's novels to bear his name. In later years, Sir Edward Elgar raised the possibility of creating an opera based on the title. The project was abandoned following Hardy's death.
The novel was immediately popular, and became "a favourite novel of many Victorians, Tennyson and Coventry Patmore among them" (Michael Millgate, Oxford DNB). Only circa 500 copies of the first edition were printed.
