Laid in: An autograph letter signed ("Thomas Hardy") from Hardy to "My dear Rideing" (probably the periodical editor and author William Henry Rideing), Max Gate, 25 January 1889, 2 pages, 8vo, three slight fold tears : "I have received your letter of January 11...About two months ago I received a copy of the [ North American ] Review [of which Rideing was an editor], but nothing more. I have just begun writing a serial novel [ Tess of the d'Urbervilles ], which will prevent my doing anything of the sort you suggest this year...As soon as I am released from outstanding engagements I will communicate with you -- though I cannot tell you when that will be..."
