Autograph letter signed ('Thomas Hardy') to 'Mr Dewar', Max Gate, 9 December 1914, referring dismissively to his great collection Satires of Circumstance (which included the 'Poems of 1912-13'), 'I raked together all the verse I could find to fill up my late volume -- a heterogeneous lot! -- & I fear I must pass over in silence the transit into next year, the times being too uncertain to inspire the right message', concluding with a reference to the ongoing war, 'I hope that we shall see light ahead before long', and thanks for some favourable reviews, one page, 8vo , bifolium (minor staining, traces of old paste to verso of integral blank).
