HARDING, WARREN G., President. Autograph letter signed ("Warren G. Harding") as President, to Herbert L. Pratt of Glen Cove, N.Y.; Washington, D.C., 5 November 1921. One page, large 8vo, on stationery with an American eagle embossed in gilt at top. Fine condition. HARDING IN OFFICE A very attractive example of a rare Harding autograph letter signed in office. Eight months into his short term as President, Harding adds a handwritten letter to Pratt's collection, and offers two personal recollections of visits to Pratt's neighborhood. "My friend, Speaker [Frederick H.] Gillett, has told me of your remarkable book of autograph letters, and I am happy to contribute this to your collection. "I have two very agreable memories of Glen Cove -- one when I addressed a most enthusiastic political meeting in 1916, the other when I made a frightfully bad golf score at Piping Rock, and still had a good time...." From the collection former by Charles Pratt an associate of John D. Rockefeller (sale, Sotheby's, 25 April 1989, lot 127). The rarity of Harding's Presidential autograph letters is documentable: from 1970 to 1992, American Book Prices Current records only this and one other example (the other sold in 1975) at auction.
