Hanway (Jonas). Reasons for an Augmentation of at least Twelve Thousand Mariners, to be employed in the Merchants-Service, and Coasting-Trade; with some thoughts on the means of providing for a number of our Seamen, after the present War is finished ... With some Remarks on the Magdalen-House. In Thirty-Three Letters to Charles Gray, Esq., of Colchester, 1st edition, London: R. and J. Dodsley, J. Waugh, and at the Pamphlet-Shops, 1759, title-page in red and black, engraved vignette, folding letterpress table, title-page frayed and marked, marginal hole in R2, repaired marginal tear to R4 (final leaf), all edges untrimmed, stitched as issued, 4to (27.8 x 22 cm) (Qty: 1) Provenance: Estate of John Lawson (1932-2019). ESTC T93939 (six copies in UK libraries); Goldsmiths' 9475; Kress 5782. Hanway wrote numerous pamhplets expounding his Christian mercantilist and philanthropic interests; he was one of the original supporters of the Magdalen Hospital for Penitent Prostitutes which opened in 1758.
