Three eighteenth-century Massachusetts appointments:
Hancock, John. Manuscript document signed ("John Hancock") as governor of Massachusetts, one page (322 x 202 mm) on a bifolium, written in a neat clerical hand, [Boston], 6 May 1790, being William Frost's appointment as "Quarter Master of the fourth Regiment in the first Brigade & sixth Division of the Militia of this Commonwealth comprehending the County of York &c," countersigned by John Avery Jr. as secretary, with embossed paper seal of Massachusetts, docketed on verso of integral blank "Quartermaster"; lightly browned, some separations and pinholes at folds.
Adams, Samuel. Partially printed broadside document (425 x 278 mm) signed twice ("Saml Adams"; "Saml Adams Secy") as secretary of the Massachusetts Council, accomplished in a neat clerical hand, Boston, 8 October 1779, being Nathaniel Wells's appointment as "one of our Justices of our Inferior Court of Common Pleas, in the County of York, within the State of Massachusetts Bay, countersigned by sixteen other members of the Council, including Artemas Ward, Walter Spooner, Thomas Cushing, Moses Gill, Joseph Simpson Samuel Niles, Aaron Wood and Thomas Durfee, docketed on verso recording Wells's taking the oath of office, 11 April 1780; some light foxing and browning, some abrasion and pinholes at folds.
