Hamtzaref, observations and novellae on Torah, Halacha and Aggada in question and answer format, thoughts on belief and wisdom and on the principles of the Hebrew and Aramaic languages, by R. Moshe Kunitz of Óbuda. Part I. Vienna, 1820. Includes a portrait of the author. Signatures and ownership inscriptions: "Meir Leib Leidesdorf", "Meir Wilhelm", "the small Itzik Weiner" (rabbi in Ormánság, Hungary), "the small Moshe Shmuel of---". The author, R. Moshe Kunitz (1774-1839), was rabbi in Obuda and Pest (Budapest). He was a disciple of the Noda B'Yehuda and Maharam Mintz. He was a controversial figure; both a rabbi and a maskil (member of the Enlightenment movement), both a Torah and a secular scholar. He authored "Ben Yochai" (Vienna, 1815), "Hamtzaref" (Vienna, 1820, Section II: Prague, 1857), "HaUyan", (Vienna, 1796), and other books. Portrait, [2], 93, [1] pages. 23.5 cm. Fair condition. Many stains and wear. Detached and loose leves. Original binding; damaged.
