HAMILTON, Sir William. Campi Phlegraei. Observations on the Volcanos of the two Sicilies as they have been communicated to the Royal Society in London [with Supplement to the Campi Phlegraei, being an account of the great eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the month of August 1779 ]. Naples: 1776-79 3 parts in one volume, large 2° (448 x 318 mm). Parallel text in English and French, 59 fine hand-coloured plates by Pietro Fabris each edged in black with grey wash border, double-page coloured map of the Bay of Naples by Fabris, engraved by Guerra. Early 19th-century gold-tooled blue straight-grained morocco, scroll border and Greek-key pattern , outer border on citron and red inlays, edges gilt. Provenance: A.H. Eyre (early 19th-century bookplate). FINE COPY of one of the most beautiful of all topographical books. The plates are so well coloured as to be scarcely distinguishable from the original drawings. Hamilton himself, wearing a red coat, appears in many of them.
