Beschreibung:

HAMILTON, ALEXANDER Signature as witness on a document for a real estate transaction of early mentor Nicholas Cruger . New York: 28 August 1786. Manuscript document on vellum 19 x 25 inches (49 x 64 cm). The document recording the sale of real estate at (70) Broad St. at Beaver St. in lower Manhattan, sold on behalf of the late John Milner by his attorney Thomas Marston for 300 pounds to merchant Nicholas Cruger, the document "Sealed & Delivered in the Presence of [Signed] Alexander Hamilton" and one other. Usual folds, somewhat rubbed at places, fresh overall and retaining two original wax seals. Nicholas Cruger, one of the largest West Indian merchants of his time, had first hired the Nevis born Hamilton at 11 years old to work in his St. Croix countinghouse and was instrumental in bringing the youth to America. After resigning from Congress, Hamilton founded the Bank of New York in 1784 and it is probable that Hamilton would have overseen the large transaction for this prominent piece of Manhattan real estate for his mentor Cruger. Today, the American Bank Note Company Building stands at 70 Broad Street. C
