WITH AUTOGRAPH FREE FRANK ("Free Secy of the Trea y "). HAMILTON AUTHORIZES PAYMENTS FOR WOUNDED AND DISABLED REVOLUTIONARY WARRIORS in this letter to Cochran, the commissioner of loans for New York. He tells him that he has "directed the Treasurer of the United States to furnish you with a draught on the Office of Discount and Deposit at New York" for $8,154, "to enable you to discharge a half years pensions which will become due to the Invalids of the United States on the 5th of the ensuing month..." Disability or "invalid" pensions for veterans were enacted in August 1776, and extended by subsequent legislation in 1782 and 1789. They provided half-pay for the length of the disability. Widows received a half-pay pension for seven years.
