[docketed 14 June 1790]. 1 page, integral address leaf with part of original red wax seal and an AUTOGRAPH ENDORSEMENT BY MORRIS. In fine original condition. AN URGENT MEETING. An intriguing, cryptic letter, asking to discuss the contents of a letter Hamilton has received from Gouverneur Morris, then in Europe: "I called upon you this afternoon to communicate a letter I have received from Mr. G[ouvernor] Morris. I shall be at home all the evening if it should be convenient to you to pass my way." Gouverneur Morris (1752-1816), Federalist and lifetime friend of Hamilton's, had been in Europe since 1788, pursuing private commercial ventures, and in London acted as an unofficial agent for the U.S. government, to re-negotiate disputed provisions of the 1783 Treaty of Paris. It was he who, 14 years later, delivered the eulogy at Hamilton's New York funeral. THIS IS THE ONLY LETTER OF HAMILTON TO ROBERT MORRIS OFFERED AT AUCTION SINCE AT LEAST 1975.
