HALLECK, Henry Wager (1815-1872), Major General . Autograph letter signed ("H.W. Halleck") to Secretary of War Simon Cameron, St. Louis, 8 February 1862. 1 page, 8vo, "Head Quarters, Department of the Missouri" stationery, minor fold tears. endorsed on verso . HALLECK AND PROBLEMS OF RANK DURING THE CIVIL WAR. A peevish Halleck complains to Secretary of War Cameron: "Brig Genls [W.T.] Sherman, [John] Pope, [Ulysses S.] Grant, Curtis, Hurlbut, Sigel, Prentiss & McClernand, all in this Dept, are of some date and each unwilling to serve under the other. If Brig Genl E.A. Hitchcock could be made Major Genl of vols & assigned to this Dept., it would satisfy all & reconcile all differences. If it can be done there should be no delay, as an experienced officer of high rank is wanted immediately on the Tennessee line." Two days later, Brig. Genl. Ethan Allen Hitchcock was raised to the rank of Major General, but Halleck's days as a field commander were numbered. After his failure to pursue the Confederate army into Mississippi after Beauregard's withdrawl from Corinth in June 1862, Halleck was called back to Washington. In October of that year the Army of the Tennessee was formed, commanded by Halleck's least favorite General, Ulysses S. Grant.
