London: by George Bishop, Ralph Newberie and Robert Barker 1599-1600. 3 volumes, 2° in sixes (288 x 182mm.). Woodcut ornaments on initials, with the suppressed account of Drake's voyage to Cadiz in first state. (Without the map as usual. Some leaves slightly soiled or spotted, margins trimmed and touching occasional headline or marginal note, ff.D1-6 in vol.I and S5-W4 in vol.II with small hole affecting a few letters, vol.III lacks ff.Hh3-4, with final leaf trimmed at outer margin with repair at foot affecting a few letters.) 19th-century calf, spines in compartments with red and black lettering pieces (rubbed, splits in hinges). Second edition, second issue with cancelled title, issue with "yeres". Provenance : John Locke (with his signature and press-mark on earlier end-papers laid down; Harrison and Laslett The Library of John Locke 1374); Baron King (gilt arms on covers).
