Autograph Letter Signed ("H. Rider Haggard"), 2 pp recto and verso, 4to, Norfolk, September 8, 1908, to the editor of The Bookman, on personal letterhead, leaf edited for publication in anther hand, toned, stains at left margin, perforations at upper left and right corners. In this letter to the editor of the literary periodical The Bookman, published in the November 1908 issue, Rider provides commentary for the "Authors at Work" series. In part: "It seems to me that the matter is entirely one of individual disposition. Some people like to go out & some like to stop at home; some love the country, some the town. No doubt the members of each class work best in the atmosphere & environments that suit them. / On such points I do not see that it is possible for any individual to generalize for others. Moreover as a rule circumstances are the master. Few can live exactly where they would like to live, or do exactly what they would like to do. They must fit themselves to whatever shaped hole is prepared for them & fill up the corners as best they may…."
