Lawes, Henry [Ayres and dialogues, for one, two, and three voyces...the first booke [...the second book...the third book], London: T. H. [the third book: W. Godbid] for John Playford, 1653-1658] [first book:] 10, 36, 28, [second book:] 10, 48 (and 4 unpaginated leaves between I and K], [third book:] [4], 48, [2] pages, folio (27.8 x 18.5cm), type-set music, woodcut initials to each song, a few old annotations, Dolmetsch Library stamp and pencil shelfmark ("II D 30, 1 [...2...3]") to reverse of photocopied titles, nineteenth-century half calf, spine defective,textblock detached,all three title-pages and pp.19/20 of third book lacking but supplied in photocopy and, in the case of the first book, also in later manuscript,browning, headlines of first book occasionally cropped RARE. We have traced only one copy each of the first, second and third books at auction in the last 30 years. The three works here - which often survive separately and incomplete - are the most important printed sources for the songs of Henry Lawes (1596-1662), the leading English songwriter of the mid-seventeenth century.
