Beschreibung:

Guillaume Seignac (French, 1870-1924) Woman with Red Floral Wreath Signed "G. SEIGNAC" l.r., stencil to the reverse, identified on a label from the Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, Massachusetts, affixed to the reverse. Oil on canvas, 38 1/2 x 29 1/4 in. (97.8 x 74.3 cm), in a period frame. Condition: Varnish inconsistencies, craquelure, surface grime. N.B. Guillaume Seignac's classical compositions reveal his mastery of both color and line as well as human anatomy. His graceful depictions of the female form epitomize the French Academic style in the late 19th century. Seignac was trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, where he studied with William A. Bouguereau and mastered figure drawing. Although he was most influenced by the work of Bouguereau, Seignac went on to study with Anthony Robert-Fleury and Gabriel Ferrier Seignac's romantic images of an idealized beauty grew exceedingly popular throughout his career and he exhibited regularly at the Salons. Sold for the benefit of the collections of the Smith College Museum of Art.
