GUICHARD DE BEAULIEU (fl. 13th century). Le Sermon. Publié pour la première fois d'après le manuscrit unique de la Bibliothèque du Roi. Paris: A. Pinard for Techener and Silvestre, 1834. 8 o (205 x 130 mm). Collation : 1-2 8. PRINTED ON VELLUM, one of three copies. Gothic type. Mid-19th-century polished calf binding, gilt fillet on sides framing a large blind-blocked cathedral design, (spine-ends chipped, joints and edges rubbed). Provenance : Louis-Philippe, duc d 'Orléans (1773-1850), King of the French (r. 1830-48), library-stamp on half-title, apparently not mentioned in his sale catalogues -- Joseph Renard (1822-82), bookplate, 1884 Paris sale, lot 506 -- château des Rozais (Chigny, Champagne). bookplate dated 1908. FIRST EDITION. 125 copies were issued, of which this is NO. 3 OF THREE COPIES ON VELLUM. The Renard catalogue attributes the binding to Simier, the King's binder, but it seems uncertain that Alphonse or René, who have some of the finest cathedral-style bindings to their name, are responsible for the present binding; the lower headcap, where the signature would be placed, is chipped off.
