Beschreibung:

Title: Guerra de los Estados-Unidos. Estudios Sobre Artilleria, Fortificacion y Marina Militar Author: Olañeta, Jose de Place: Madrid Publisher: Imprenta del Memorial de Ingenieros Date: 1868 Description: 332 pp. 19 folding plates and charts. (8vo) period full olive Spanish calf (possibly a presentation binding) all edges gilt. First Edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to General Daniel E. Sickles. A notable copy of this extensive Spanish work on the military technology of the American Civil War. Inscribed to Gen. Daniel Sickles while he was serving as U.S. minister to Spain. Sickles, of Gettysburg fame, was a rather controversial military leader and diplomat, having notoriety for murdering his wife's lover, Philip Barton Key, son of Francis Scott Key. Sickles was acquitted in what may have been the earliest successful use of the temporary insanity legal defense in United States history. Olañeta, a Spanish military expert and Commander of Infantry, presents a detailed analysis of American military technology, including artillery, cannons, ammunition, coastal fortifications, and marine warfare. Among the plates are a nice folding chart of Charleston and environs; detailed technical drawings of the Parrott Cannon; battle plan of Fort Pulaski; as well as detailed plans of the Monitor ironclad. WorldCat locates only three copies. Uncommon. Lot Amendments Condition: Some light wear and scuffing to leather, endpapers soiled; light foxing; very good. Item number: 212887
