GRUMMAN MISSILE WIND TUNNEL TEST MODEL. Machined steel model for wind tunnel testing, lacking markings on the model itself, on a circular wooden base with a plaque that reads "Grumman Design #142 Missile." 40 x 5.5 inches diameter, excluding stand. Provenance: Manufactured by a major aerospace model shop. Grumman designed this SARH (semi-active radar homing) missile in the 1950s for the "Bushfire" rear defense system, to be installed in Martin's P6M SeaMaster flying boat. It does not appear to have been a successful design, as the standard specification for the SeaMaster calls for two 20-mm rear-firing cannons, not a missile defense system.
