Protocetidae Middle Eocene, Bartonian Aridal Formation, Gueran, Southwestern Morocco Walking whales were discovered only recently, when the remains of an early transitional whale was discovered. The fascinating semi-aquatic mammal possessed both front and rear limbs. Over millions of years, evolution transformed the front limbs into flippers and removed the rear limbs entirely. Walking whales most likely spent most of their time in the water, hunting fish.
