Murder of M.V.B. Griswold, by Five Chinese Assassins.... Jackson: T.A. Springer & Co., 1858. 8vo (220 x 150 mm). 3 wood-engraved portraits of the assassins after ambrotypes by O. Hemenway. Original printed and illustrated blue wrappers, bound in to half morocco over pebbled cloth boards, spine gilt. Title and penultimate leaf with tail edge briefly extended (by publisher?), minor dampstain to outer edge of top margin of a few leaves, front wrapper with repair to one corner at verso with replacement piece and tape, stamp excised to lower margin, reinforcement to gutter margin, verso of front and rear wrappers, binding with spine partially detached. FIRST EDITION of this earliest known imprint of the press in Jackson. Describes the murder of local businessman Griswold, who was protecting his employer's safe, by five Chinese men, most of whom were hanged, and one of whom committed suicide. The book also describes Griswold's overland journey to Oregon in 1848, and then to California the following year and the adventures therein. A rare publication.
