FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, second issue. The Grimms were well served by both their English translator, Edgar Taylor, and by Cruikshank's etchings, 'the first real, kindly agreeable, and infinitely amusing, and charming illustrations for a child's book in England' (Charles Welsh). Intricately worked, the illustrations were regarded by Ruskin and Thackeray as the artist's chef d'oeuvre, and gave new status to the illustrator's role in children's literature. Alderson & Oyens 304; Cohn 369; Gumuchian I, 2835; Early Children's Books 197; Ray English 112. (2)
