GRIMM, Jacob (1785-1863). Autograph letter signed ('Jacob Grimm') to the publisher Wilhelm Engelmann, Cassel, 30 March 1838, one page, 4to , integral address leaf, remnant of seal (seal tear). Grimm had hoped to answer Engelmann's letter in person, but his projected trip to Leipzig has been postponed: he has for the moment no reason to break his relationship with his publisher in Göttingen [Dieterich], but circumstances may permit in the future a collaboration with Engelmann: 'Bis jetzt habe ich freilich noch keinen Grund mit meinem Göttinger Verleger abzubrechen, nur durch eine weite Entfernung würde unser Verhältniß gehemmt und vielleicht gelöst werden. Sollte mich mein Geschick in nähere Verbindung mit Leipzig bringen, so würde ich wegen Herausgabe neuer Werke vorzugsweise gern mit Ihnen unterhandeln'. Grimm and his brother Wilhelm had been dismissed from his post as professor and librarian in Göttingen and banished from the state of Hanover in the previous year after signing a protest against the King's abrogation of the constitution. In 1840 they both moved to Berlin to take up professorships.
