GRIFFITHS, D., Jr. Two Years' Residence in the New Settlements of Ohio, North America: With Directions to Emigrants . London: Westley and Davis; Jackson and Walford, et al, 1835. 12 o (184 x 109 mm). Half-title, list of subscribers. Woodcut frontispiece. Original green pebbled cloth, printed paper spine label (some light rubbing); quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance : effaced ownership inscription on pastedown; Frank C. Deering (1866-1939, bookplate). RECOMMENDING SETTLEMENT IN THE WESTERN RESERVE: "Ohio itself is always reckoned one of the best and most inviting States embraced by the Great Valley of the Mississippi" (p.vi). FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED on the front free endpaper: "From the Author." A decidedly pro-emigration work, Griffiths (whose first name eludes bibliographers), starts his work declaring: "Whatever political economists may think about emigration as a public relief, it cannot be denied that many English labourers have found it to be a private advantage; and others are preparing to following the example." The remainder of the work is spent detailing the Ohio settlements, which Griffiths proposes best answers the question, "Where shall we go to better our circumstances?" Griffiths principally describes the settlements in the Western Reserve, and recommends this as the best area for English settlement. The woodcut frontispiece shows a log cabin and settler on horseback. Graff 1677; Jones 969; Rusk II:110; Sabin 28833; Streeter sale III:1374; Thomson 466.
