GREY, Zane (1875-1939). Autograph manuscript of his novel Faaone, or The Reef Girl, set in Tahiti, completed and published posthumously, the text with considerable revision and correction by Grey. n.p. n.d. [1948-1939]. 459 pp., folio, in bold pencil on rectos only of sheets of lined legal stationery, a few leaves with clean tears, scattered fraying at edges of some leaves, in a quarter black morocco protective slipcase. THE MANUSCRIPT OF ONE OF GREY'S LAST NOVELS, SET IN TAHITI A very extensive autograph manuscript of the prolific Grey, best-known for his very characteristic western adventure novels like the Last of the Plainsmen (1908), The Thundering Herd , The Mysterious Rider (1921) and Code of the West (1934), novels which collectively defined the genre. Grey, an avid angler and sport fisherman, traveled extensively in the Pacific in the 1930s, and this exposure to the culture of the islands was the inspiration for Faaone , left nearly complete at his death. Subsequently, it was finished by Grey's son and published under the title Faaone: or The Reef Girl . Grey has inscribed the title "Faaone" at the top of the first page and the entire draft is written in very uniform, dark pencil in a clear, readable hand. Nearly every page shows some revision or correction by the author, usually with interlinear additions or word substitutions.
