GREENAWAY, Kate. Two original pencil and watercolor drawings, each on a folded card, with manuscript drafts of children's stories inside each: "The Naughty Little Girl who went to see her Grandmama"; and "The Story of a Good Girl". Circa 1884. Each card folded measures 74 x 66 mm. (2.7/8 x 2.5/8 in.); each drawing approximately 58 x 50 mm. (2¼ x 2 in.) . On one card, The Naughty Girl, in a blue and white checked dress and black bonnet, with a spade lying on the ground behind her, appears to have just dug up carrots (or possibly rhubarb) from the garden and to be tossing them into the air. Inside the card is the pencil title "History of a Naughty Girl" and the manuscript lines: "She was bad - the things she did - how I will tell you just what she did in one day. She went to tea with her Grandmother." On the second card, a Good Girl is shown in a white dress, blue sash and straw bonnet, outside a cottage garden with hollyhocks , holding a white cat and with three kittens at her feet. Inside the card is the pencil title "A Story of a Good Girl" and the manuscript lines: "She went to tea at her grandmother's too - but what a difference - such a fuss there was just as if the Queen was coming - the cat and kittens frisking about like mad - and mewing to have blue bows put on them to do her honour". The first of these cards, "The Story of the Naughty Girl" appears to be related to an unpublished miniature four page illustrated story, written by Kate Greenaway in 1884. This miniature book was given to Violet Severn, the young daughter of Mrs Arthur Severn the cousin and adopted daughter of John Ruskin In the charmingly illustrated story, a Naughty Girl (differently dressed, in a blue dress, yellow sash and white bonnet) visits her grandmother and disgraces herself by misdemeanours which include chasing a butterfly with her parasol, throwing her grandmother's rhubarb down the well, dropping stones off a bridge onto passers-by, eating her grandmother's gooseberries, chasing the cat and hens, and knocking over the beehives. These two cards might have been sketches in preparation for a published version of this story, and a sequel or companion to it, a project apparently never completed. (2)
