Manuscript surveyor's journal for areas in Germantown.
Germantown: 1829-1830. 63 pp., small folio (350 x 190 mm). Pen-and-ink and watercolor, each survey signed and dated by Green. With additional, later inscriptions in the rear by others, followed by blanks. Contemporary boards, rebacked to style. Condition : rebacked and recased. Approximately 33 pages are given over to surveys of various streets and plots in Germantown, mostly on or just off of Main Street, Allen’s Lane, School House Lane, Church Lane, Washington Lane, etc. The remaining pages comprise tables of bearings and distances, extracts from provincial records concerning the laying of roads in the area, as well as personal reflections (e.g. marriages, dates of various fires, lyrics to Yankee Doodle, and more). The final survey in the book is dated 1830, though Green’s last entry seems to be dated five years later; another hand continues diary entries in the 1890s.
