GREELY, Adolphus – VIRGIL (70-19). The Works of Virgil. Translated by John Dryden . New York: American Book Exchange, 1881. A book abandoned in the ice by the Lady Franklin Bay expedition and later recovered by Peary’s surgeon. This copy of Dryden’s Virgil was part of the library brought to Fort Conger on Ellesmere Island by Greely, commander of the ill-fated Lady Franklin Bay expedition (1881-1884). It was left behind when the survivors—only six men out of twenty-six—were rescued. The book was later recovered by Thomas S. Dedrick, Jr., the surgeon on the Peary Arctic Expedition (1898-1902). There is a three-page inscription by Dedrick presenting the book to F.H. Green, dated 1923, and a tipped-in note from Greely explaining that the book "traveled to and from the Arctic regions." 12mo (157 x 112mm). Two notes from Greely laid in, newspaper clipping of Greely memorial mounted on rear pastedown (small repair to title). Publisher’s original brown cloth. Provenance : Adolphus Greely (1844-1935; signatures and note) – Thomas S. Dedrick, Jr. (fl. 1900; signature and note, surgeon on Peary’s Arctic expedition) – F. H. Green (gift inscription dated 1931) – John Windle, Antiquarian Bookseller.
