Greek literature] - PHALARIS (Pseudo-) - Phalaridis Agrigentinorum tyranni epistolae. Ex mss. recensuit, versione, annotationibus, & vita insuper authoris donavit Car. Boyle. Oxford, J. Crooke at the Sheldonian Theatre, 1695, 8vo, cont. calf, gilt labelled spine, [20]-156-[8] pp. (paper age-toned, some marg. dampstaining). Good copy.
Rare ed. by Charles Boyle, Earl of Orrery (1676-1731) of the letters commonly ascribed to Phalaris, tyrant of Acragas (570-554 B.C.) “notorious for cruelty, especially for the hollow brazen bull in which his victims were confined and roasted alive (...) The letters bearing his name were written by a sophist, perhaps of the second century A.D. (proved by Bentley in 1697)” (OCD). Engr. front. Engr. mark on title. Name on title.
