Accompanied by Descriptions, Geographical, Historical, Scientific, and Statistical Author: Gray, O[rmando] W[illis] Place: Philadelphia Publisher: Stedman, Brown & Lyon Date: 1873 Description: 175 + [21 (classified directory, etc.)] pp. With 65 lithographed maps (including the Mountains and River chart), all but 1 (U.S. Climatology map) are hand-colored, 12 are double-page; plus numerous insets. (Folio) 17¼x14¾, original quarter sheep and brown cloth, lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, hinges reinforced. Very clean 1873 atlas of the United States, with double-page maps of some of the individual states, plus nice full-page city maps (most with inset maps). Includes attractively colored geologic and scientific maps of the U.S.; New York (with 7 insets); Texas (with two insets); California and the Southwestern states; and a nice double-page map of New York City. Eight full-page city plans of: Washington DC, Boston, New York City, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Chicago, Madison and Milwaukee. Also with other world maps, including: Oceanica; North, South and Central America; Europe; Great Britain; 4 maps of Germany; Asia; Africa, etc. Does not contain the rare folding map that shows the railroads of New England and appears to be lacking a few other maps. See Phillips Atlases 4526 (citing 1874 edition). Lot Amendments Condition: Leather worn, cloth rubbed, edge wear, chips and tears to spine ends; binding shaken, couple maps a bit loose, mild toning, scattered marginal dampstains, occasional faint foxing; maps very good to near fine with bright coloring in a good to very good binding.
